A Brief on The Natural Approach Historical Background With more and more linguists and scholars-alike noticed that the language teaching field demanded a more naturalistic strategy, the era of direct and audio-lingual methods in foreign and second language teaching was beginning to come to an end. It was not until 1970, California did Tracy Terrell, a Spanish language teacher, come up with an entirely new language teaching method that focused intensely on developing communicative skills in students. This newfound method, he referred to as the "Natural Approach". He was soon joined by linguist Stephen Krashen, who supported his idea and together they formulated the fundamentals of their new method.
